I am new to working with WordPress, so pardon me if this seems like a basic question. On my WordPress Dashboard, there is a notification at the top of the page that reads, “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.” However, at the bottom of the page under “At a Glance,” it says that “WordPress 6.2 is running Astra Theme.” I presume that I have the latest version of WordPress. If that is the case, why am I being asked to update it again?
Thanks for your help.
Please remove all files related to the “twentytwentyone” theme that are found in the /themes/ directory, as they are improperly structured and often unpredictable. Rather than uploading files one at a time, could you please try uploading the entire unzipped /twentytwentyone/ folder? It is considered a single file, so hopefully, you should be able to upload the entire folder at once. Please note that the _MACOSX folders are specific to the Mac file system and have no value on web servers or any other operating systems. They are meant to correspond to companion folders that contain all the necessary files.
If the above approach does not work, then let us attempt a slight variation of the direct installation method you initially tried. Please go to the themes page on your website, then click “Add New.” I presume that you found the “twenty*” themes here, then clicked “Install” in the appropriate box. If that attempt failed, then this time, click “Upload Theme,” which you will find at the top of the page and upload the .zip file previously downloaded from your local computer.
If neither of these approaches solves the issue, then I am afraid more advanced corrective techniques are beyond the capabilities of your host’s file manager. In that case, you will need to accomplish the task using an appropriate FTP client on your local computer. FileZilla is the most popular FTP client that you can use for this. While its use is quite similar to other file managers, it has two different locations side by side. The challenge might be in setting up a proper FTP connection. However, the WP FTP Clients page has useful links on the process. Additionally, your host may have FileZilla instructions that are specific to their hosting requirements and could make the process less onerous.
I hope it doesn’t come to the point where you will need to use FTP. Nonetheless, it is an essential skill for website management, and mastering its use will likely benefit you both now and in the future.
It’s possible that WordPress has auto-updated itself again and completed the update process. Alternatively, it’s also possible that the update is incomplete, which might explain why it is only registering as version 6.2. To be on the safe side, I recommend clicking on the “Reinstall version 6.2” button, which can be found on the updates screen.
If you want to ensure that you have a complete update, the best option is to perform a manual update by downloading the latest version. Even though it might seem like you are doing the same update again, this approach will remove all the old files and replace them with the new ones. This method seems to be more dependable than the reinstall button for some users.
